Maya Angelou का जन्म 4 अप्रैल 1928 को St. Louis, Missouri, USA में हुआ। उनके पिता Bailey Johnson और माता Vivian Baxter थे। जब वह केवल तीन साल की थीं, तो उनके माता-पिता का तलाक हो गया और माया तथा उनके भाई Bailey Jr. को उनकी दादी Annie Henderson के पास भेज दिया गया।
Childhood में ही उन्होंने बहुत कष्ट सहे। जब वह मात्र 8 वर्ष की थीं, तब उनके साथ यौन शोषण की घटना हुई। इस घटना का इतना गहरा असर पड़ा कि उन्होंने लगभग 5 वर्षों तक बोलना बंद कर दिया। उन्होंने silence के उस दौर में किताबों, कविताओं और साहित्य को अपना साथी बना लिया।
यहीं से माया की जिंदगी में literature और poetry का बीज बोया गया।
